About Me

Catherine Ferreira.jpg

Hello and Welcome!

I am a registered Counselling Psychologist who is passionate about working with people across the lifespan, including adults, couples, teenagers, children, families, and parents with their infants.

Therapy, to me, is not just about managing challenges and symptoms—it’s about reconnecting with parts of yourself, making sense of your experiences, and sculpting your life to be more aligned with who you are. I am deeply interested in how we, as individuals, think and feel, endure through pain and difficulty, and grow and heal, and I feel privileged to be part of that process with my clients. My aim is to create a warm, safe, and caring space where you feel truly heard, understood, and comfortable to be yourself.

I like to work with people holistically, helping them integrate their emotions, thought patterns, body awareness, social functioning, and personal, cultural or religious beliefs into a unified whole.

In my therapeutic approach, I primarily use psychodynamic psychotherapy, as it allows for a deeper understanding of oneself and creates enduring changes in one's life by exploring the underlying factors that influence emotions, behaviours, ways of relating, and overall well-being.

However, each individual who comes to see me in therapy has a different story, and their goals, needs and financial situation differ. As such, I believe in tailoring therapy for the specific needs of the individual, child, couple or family. With this in mind, I may integrate a range of other evidence-based models, including mentalisation, mindfulness, cognitive-behavioural, solution-focused, existential, and dialectical-behavioural approaches, to ensure that treatment is effective and aligned with your goals.

I completed all of my Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies at the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS). This includes the following degrees: BA, BA Honours (Psychology) - Cum Laude, and MA Community-Based Counselling Psychology - Cum Laude. My Masters research dissertation focused on 'Sub-Saharan African Refugee Women's Lived Experiences of Gender-Based Violence and Their Adaptive Processes.'

As a practicing Psychologist in private practice, I predominantly consult in a private capacity. I do, however, work part-time in a NGO's community clinic, where I focus primarily on child psychotherapy, parent-infant psychotherapy, parental guidance counselling, running parenting groups, and conducting psychoeducational assessments. I have previously consulted at a government hospital in Johannesburg, particularly with pregnant women and mothers with new born babies, including babies in the NICU and High Care Nurseries. The focus of these consultations was on maternal and infant mental health.

I also have extensive experience working with adults, including young adults at University, as well as couples, who struggled with a wide range of challenges. Some of these challenges include depression, self-harming behaviours, suicide, stress and anxiety, loss and grief, eating disorders, childhood trauma, emotional, sexual and physical abuse, acute trauma (robberies, hijackings, attempted kidnappings), PTSD, personality disorders, relationship challenges, unplanned pregnancy, and challenges related to their careers and work-place stress, to name a few. Beyond therapy, I have conducted numerous psychological assessments, including psychoeducational, concessions and career assessments.

Whether you're looking for support for yourself, your child or family, or in need of a psychological assessment, I'm here to provide understanding, empathy and professional guidance throughout the entire process.
